The Story Behind Pinoy Cookbooks

Pinoy Cookbooks began with something simple: a craving for home.

Like many Filipinos, we grew up surrounded by the smells and sounds of a kitchen that was always alive — garlic sizzling in the pan, patis steaming gently, the clatter of spoons on enamel plates, and family stories passed around the table like extra servings of rice. Food wasn’t just food. It was memory. It was tradition. It was how we showed love without needing the words.

But as life took me farther from home, I realized how easy it was to lose those flavors. Without a Lola nearby to teach the secrets, without a Tita handing down handwritten recipe cards, Filipino cooking suddenly felt more complicated than it needed to be.

And we weren't the only ones who felt that way.

Filipino-Americans would often say, “I want to cook Filipino food, but I don’t know where to start.”
Home cooks from all backgrounds would say, “I love Filipino food, but I’m intimidated by unfamiliar ingredients.”

That’s when Pinoy Cookbooks was born — out of a desire to preserve our rich culinary heritage and make it simple, joyful, and accessible for everyone.

Today, Pinoy Cookbooks is more than a collection of recipes. It’s a bridge.
